Preventing Burnout - The Inspired Way Through

When it's past the time to take notice.

I was recently part of a group where one participant, a leadership coach, reported that amongst the five different people she works with each day at least two will be expressing that they feel burnt out. That's 40% of her client base who are supposed to be working on business related problems, but who are feeling too fried to carry on. A 2018 survey by Deloitte showed an even worse picture with 77% of 1000 respondents reporting burnout in their current job and with 83 percent of those respondents saying that burnout from work can 'negatively impact their personal relationships'. Whichever way you look at it these are appalling statistics.

These both refer specifically to burnout in the workplace, but this isn't the sole cause of this kind of stress-related breakdown. Relationship issues, single-parenthood, the death of a loved one, financial stress, neuro-diversity, ungrounded spiritual awakenings, and anything else which pushes an individual over the edge of the stress barrier, all can lead to burnout.

So What is Burnout?

Burnout is not stress, or anxiety, or depression but the end result; it's the shutdown when it all gets too much. It is a loudly silent and quite extreme message for things to change. Think of it as a cup that gets too full and then shatters in protest, caused by prolonged pressure and stress, built up over time. The experience is felt differently by each individual and can include a complicated mix of unconscious and conscious mind issues, practical problems, and somatic, or body-based responses.

It Starts With Small Signs

How to know if you are experiencing a burnout state or are about to? Most people start with noticing they are doing things to keep going in-spite of the small signs that something is wrong. And then the signs get clearer and louder until they can't be ignored. If you have a high-pressure job or have been through a traumatic or stressful life event and are suffering from any of the list below, the chances are that you may have emerging or well established burnout and it is important to do something about it sooner rather than later.

  • Feelings of Stress or Overwhelm

  • Lack of Energy or Feelings of Exhaustion

  • Loss of Motivation

  • Difficulty Concentrating

  • Sleep Issues

  • Lowered Sense of Satisfaction at Work

  • Problems with Concentration or Memory

  • Feelings of Having a 'Short fuse' or Irritability

  • Detachment or Feeling Remote

  • Feeling Alone

  • Feeling Overly Negative or Pessimistic

  • Excessive Self Criticism

  • Disillusionment and Loss of a Sense of Meaning or Purpose

  • Feeling anxious

  • Excessive Tiredness or Lethargy

  • Finding Yourself Not Returning Calls or Emails or Not Showing Up For Commitments

  • Withdrawal From Social Situations

  • Work Absenteeism or lateness

Some of the physical symptoms include:

  • Chronic Fatigue

  • Heart palpitations

  • Relationship Problems

  • Weight Loss/Weight Gain

  • Aching, Tired Body

  • Low Energy

  • Frequent Illnesses due to Lowered Immune System

  • Brain Fog

  • Loss of Libido

  • Insomnia

These are some of the experiences of people who have been under extreme stress for a period of time and who are suffering from burnout. But of course there may be many reasons for experiencing symptoms, so it's always worth talking to your GP to rule out any underlying health issues as well as seeking psychological and practical support.
